Surgical Versus Non Surgical Periodontal Treatment San Ramon

More often than not, non surgical periodontal treatment, also known as scaling and root planning, root surface debridement or deep cleaning, performed by our specialist periodontist, will be enough to treat the majority of the areas where you might have bone loss, bleeding, pocketing, inflammation, bad taste or smell.

You should know that scaling and root planning done by our specialist periodontist Dr. Janice Kaeley will be significantly different to the one done by the hygienist or general dentist, as this will likely be targeted to the areas where the plaque and calculus full of damaging bacteria like to hide, and hence hopefully more effective. This is the reason they study and practice for so many years!

However, there will be a handful of cases, where the area with gum disease will not respond as good as it should to the initial periodontal treatment, or perhaps the bone loss around the root of the tooth has progressed too far for the area to resolve fully. In those instances, there are 2 other types of treatments. Whilst these may sound scary, they really aren’t. The only difference for you is that some stitches would be placed for about 7 to 10 days before the area fully recovers.

The surgical periodontal treatments are:

Pocket Depth Reduction Periodontal Surgery:

During this procedure, our periodontist (gum specialist) is able to access the affected gum tissue to remove the harmful bacteria from inside the pockets. After the bone and gum that hold the teeth are fully cleaned, then we secure the gum tissue in an adequate place over the tooth, thus eliminating the lingering pockets or reducing their size significantly.

Guided Tissue Regeneration Periodontal Surgery:

If the bone supporting your teeth has been destroyed severely as a result of gum disease, a procedure to regenerate lost bone and tissue may be recommended. As in pocket depth reduction, our periodontist will access the inside of the pockets to remove any lingering bacteria that are damaging the bone. Once the bone is thoroughly cleaned, a regenerative biomaterial, will then be applied to encourage your body to naturally regenerate bone and tissue in that area. After the regenerative material is put in place, the gum tissue is secured over the root and tooth.
